Helensvale Writers Group was formed in 2005 and is a well-established, not-for-profit group with specific interests and relies on sponsorship and occasional small donations by the members. Officially we have 18 registered members at present with an average of 10 at a meeting.
The group is open to new members of any age and all levels of experience in writing, editing or publishing. However we are not just a social group. All our members are in the process of writing in a variety of genres. We do not tolerate uncivilised behaviour and therefore membership can be revoked by a majority vote of the other members. To become a member you must agree to view it as a privilege and not a right.
The main purpose of our group is to learn what we can about writing, editing, marketing and publishing. All members of the group share the same goal of perfecting writing skills and acquiring knowledge in editing, marketing and publishing.
We have members who are published writers, self-published writers, self-publishing providers and publishers. We learn a great deal by working with writers of different genres and find it inspiring.
We meet on a monthly basis on the third Thursday of each month at the Helensvale Library from 11;30 am to 1;30 pm. to learn, share ideas and encourage each other. Almost every meeting we do an appraisal of written work by one of our members where we offer honest critique and feedback in a constructive manner. We use prior email to save time and facilitate discussion at the meetings. It is not compulsory for members to put forward material for appraisal but most find it very rewarding.
An official facilitator is responsible for all administrative affairs, meeting structure and meeting moderation. Our meetings are based on prepared writing exercises, workshops, appraisals, and informative talks on specific topics presented by the members, or formulated by guest speakers.
Sometimes we invite professional writers as guest speakers if our group makes a decision that we need extra knowledge in writing, editing, marketing or publishing. On our official website where we share with the public who we are, what we do and we share our resources on writing, editing, marketing and publishing.
