Brian Falkner Loves Telling Stories

Brian Falkner Loves Telling Stories

Who better to tell us than Brian Falkner?

Brian Falkner

Brian Falkner loves telling stories and this time he was telling us about writing stories.  This award-winning and bestselling author conducted a workshop for the Helensvale Writers’ Group in October, 2017.

We all understand what a story is but do we appreciate the knowledge, techniques and time that it takes to weave settings, characters, actions, triggers and turning points into a good story? With 17 books for children and young adults and as the winner of the New Zealand’s Children’s Book Award for Young Adults, who better to tell us than Brian Falkner?

That “Stories come from anywhere,” may not be a surprising conclusion but it is profound. Regardless of where a story originates, it is an idea; an idea that is to be transformed into a story. That is not a simple transition. The story will need a structure. A structure or basic outline is however not a blueprint, it simply provides guidance. Guidance that should indicate or trigger desired actions, present problems or challenges, lead to some climax or key event and ultimately point to closure and resolution.

Mastering the writing of a story is not just about characters and their relationships. Can you convince readers that everything is real? Is there an underlying theme, an important message or is there a wakeup call or it is about hope? Like the hope that Brian had mastered in his book of stories – “That Stubborn Seed of Hope.”

Brian Falkner’s workshop was highly informative with many valuable “what and how” insights. His presentation was relaxing and entertaining. He showed us all a non-threatening path to write good stories. The Helensvale Writers’ Group was pleased that Brian was able to so competently answer numerous and specific questions after the workshop.

We thank Brian for his generous insights and wish him well.

Fantasy fiction and real life of Kylie Chan

Fantasy fiction and real life of Kylie Chan

Helensvale Writers Group meeting in October

A bestselling Australian author – Kylie Chan

A bestselling Australian author, Kylie Chan shared her experience in writing and publishing with Helensvale Writers Group.

Her first novel in the trilogy, White Tiger, about “a world of martial arts and magic where gods and demons walk the streets” was published 11 years ago. Since then, about a dozen of new books were published and Kylie is still writing. Not surprisingly, before she became a writer, she felt that her creativity was locked away. Everything changed when she made a drastic decision returning to Australia from Hong Kong. Her next book – Scales of Empire, about the mission of a lifetime to colonise a distant planet, has been scheduled for release in March 2018.

Great conversation with Kylie Chan

Thank you, Kylie Chan !!!

The writers from Helensvale Writers Group were pleased to absorb her passion for writing and life. Her openness and sincerity were greatly appreciated and well received. “It felt like a conversation with a friend rather than a speech delivery”.  “It was balanced and yet, inspiring.”  “It was great!”

Thank you very much, Kylie Chan!

Overcoming Writer’s Block with Carolyn Martinez

Overcoming Writer’s Block with Carolyn Martinez

This month, the Helensvale Writers’ Group had a productive workshop with Carolyn Martinez.

Brisbane Book Authors co-ordinator

Carolyn Martinez

Carolyn Martinez is a former newspaper editor/owner and the author of two non-fiction books – ‘Finding Love Again’ and ‘Inspiring IVF Stories’. She is an Author’s Coach offering manuscript structural assessments, editing, proofreading and book production services. In her spare time, she co-ordinates Brisbane Book Authors, a not-for-profit social networking group for published authors.

The Helensvale writers were delighted to learn how to overcome Writer’s Block with Carolyn Martinez because she does not believe in Writer’s Block. How refreshing!

Deep Point of View (DPV)

Learning and gaining new knowledge

In addition, Carolyn shared her understanding on Deep Point of View (DPV) – “a technique that strips the author voice out of the prose” and allows us “to dig deeper into the mental state of the character”. This technique is currently in favour with editors and publishers. How did we miss that one?

For the members of the Helensvale Writers Group it was not easy to grasp the insights of DPV from the initial introduction by Carolyn Luckily, as soon as Carolyn took us through her workshop-based exercises, enlightenment filled the room. We are very grateful to Carolyn Martinez for the opportunity to learn from her.

Thank you very much!

Author Platform workshop with Karen Tyrrell

Workshop by Karen Tyrrell

Author Karen Tyrrell

On the 15th of June 2017, the Helensvale Writers’ Group welcomed author Karen Tyrrell to share her knowledge on the significance of an authentic author platform.  The concept of an author platform is considered to be one of the most difficult to explain. The reason for complexity in the explanation is simple – everyone defines it differently and new definitions are emerging.

If Jane Friedman described it as “an ability to sell books because of who you can reach”, Forbes offered a more detailed explanation for what it used to be – “the writer’s public visibility and reputation that the publisher’s publicity department used to promote and sell the book.” Furthermore, Forbes outlines the difference from the past – “Now it’s the author, not a publicist, who inspires readers to buy the book. The New Author Platform allows not only well-established authors, but unknown, first-time beginners to do an end run around the conservative gate-keepers and reach readers directly.” The elements of the new author platform include: personality, authenticity and expertise.  In great detail, these elements were described to the Helensvale Writers’ Group by Karen Tyrrell during her workshop – “Memoir Writing tips and How to build an Author Platform.”

According to Karen it is important for authors to convey to readers why they write in order to connect. It is important to authors to disclose what they stand for. It is important for authors to show what they create and to demonstrate clearly to whom their creations are addressed. Karen is an award-winning author of eight empowering books. She is passionate about self-improvement and well-being. Why does she write about it? She writes because she is a survivor of bullying and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Not surprisingly, she is the winner of three Regional Arts Development Funds (RADFs). On 24th of June (Saturday), at 11 pm she is launching her new book “The Battle of Bug World (Song Bird 2)” at the Logan North Library.  Her own author platform helped her to create her public face. It allowed her to build trust with her current readers, attract potential new readers and established her reputation and expertise.

The workshop with Karen Tyrrell was productive and entertaining. Some members of the Helensvale Writers’ Group found some new ways of thinking about their writing; some called it an excellent workshop because it was professional and insightful – absolutely outstanding!

Thank you very much Karen!
